Prophecies of His Coming

1. The First Promise of the Messiah

Old Testament Prophecy:

Genesis 3:15 - "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Galatians 4:4 - "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law" 1 John 3:8 - "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil"

2. The Prophet Like Moses

Old Testament Prophecy:

Deuteronomy 18:15,18-19 - "The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear... I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Acts 3:20,22 - "And that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before... For Moses truly said to the fathers, 'The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things'"

Prophecies of His Ancestry

3. Seed of Abraham

Old Testament Prophecy:

Genesis 12:3 - "I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." Genesis 22:18 - "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 1:1 - "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham" Galatians 3:16 - "Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as of many, but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' who is Christ"

4. From the Tribe of Judah

Old Testament Prophecy:

Genesis 49:10 - "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Luke 3:33 - "...the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah" Hebrews 7:14 - "For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah"

5. Heir to David's Throne

Old Testament Prophecy:

2 Samuel 7:12-13 - "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever." Isaiah 9:7 - "Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Luke 1:32-33 - "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end"

6. Eternal Existence

Old Testament Prophecy:

Micah 5:2 - "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Colossians 1:17 - "And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist" John 8:58 - "Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM'"

Prophecies of His Birth

7. Born of a Virgin

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 1:22-23 - "So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which is translated, 'God with us'" Luke 1:26-27,30-31 - "Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph... 8. Born in Bethlehem

Old Testament Prophecy:

Micah 5:2 - "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 2:1 - "Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king" Luke 2:4-7 - "Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem... And she brought forth her firstborn Son"

9. Massacre of Infants

Old Testament Prophecy:

Jeremiah 31:15 - "Thus says the LORD: 'A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.'"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 2:16-18 - "Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under... Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet"

10. Flight to Egypt

Old Testament Prophecy:

Hosea 11:1 - "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 2:14-15 - "When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, 'Out of Egypt I called My Son'"

Prophecies of His Nature

11. His Name Shall Be Immanuel

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 7:14 - "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 1:23 - "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which is translated, 'God with us'"

12. He Would Be God

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 9:6 - "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Psalm 45:6-7 - "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 1:1,14 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" Hebrews 1:8 - "But to the Son He says: 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom'"

13. He Would Be the Son of God

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 2:7 - "I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, 'You are My Son, today I have begotten You.'" 2 Samuel 7:14 - "I will be his Father, and he shall be My son."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 3:17 - "And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'" Luke 1:32 - "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest"

14. Anointed by the Holy Spirit

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 11:2 - "The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD." Isaiah 61:1 - "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 3:16-17 - "When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him" Luke 4:18-21 - "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor... Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing"

Prophecies of His Ministry

15. Preceded by a Messenger

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 40:3 - "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.'" Malachi 3:1 - "Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 3:1-3 - "In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!' For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah" Mark 1:2-4 - "As it is written in the Prophets: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You'"

16. Ministry to Begin in Galilee

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 9:1-2 - "Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed... The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali... in Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 4:12-17 - "Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet"

17. Ministry of Miracles

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 35:5-6 - "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 11:4-5 - "Jesus answered and said to them, 'Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them'"

18. Teacher of Parables

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 78:1-2 - "Give ear, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 13:34-35 - "All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 'I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world'"

19. He Would Enter the Temple

Old Testament Prophecy:

Malachi 3:1 - "And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,' says the LORD of hosts."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 21:12 - "Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple" Luke 2:27-32 - "So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus... he took Him up in his arms and blessed God"

20. Enter Jerusalem on a Donkey

Old Testament Prophecy:

Zechariah 9:9 - "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 21:4-5 - "All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 'Tell the daughter of Zion, "Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey"'" John 12:14-15 - "Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 'Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt'"

21. Stone of Stumbling to Jews

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 8:14 - "He will be as a sanctuary, but a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel" Psalm 118:22 - "The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

1 Peter 2:6-8 - "Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, 'Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.' Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,' and 'A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense'" Romans 9:32-33 - "Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone"

22. Light to the Gentiles

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 42:1,6 - "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles... I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles" Isaiah 60:3 - "The Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 4:16 - "The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned" Luke 2:32 - "A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel" Acts 13:47-48 - "For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.' Prophecies of His Betrayal

23. Betrayed by a Friend

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 41:9 - "Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me." Psalm 55:12-14 - "For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; then I could bear it... But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked to the house of God in the throng."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 26:47,49-50 - "And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs... Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi!' and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, 'Friend, why have you come?'" John 13:18,21 - "I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me'... 'Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me'"

24. Betrayed for Thirty Pieces of Silver

Old Testament Prophecy:

Zechariah 11:12 - "Then I said to them, 'If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.' So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 26:14-15 - "Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, 'What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?' And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver"

25. Money Thrown in God's House

Old Testament Prophecy:

Zechariah 11:13 - "And the LORD said to me, 'Throw it to the potter'—that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:3-5 - "Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders... Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed"

26. Price Given for Potter's Field

Old Testament Prophecy:

Zechariah 11:13 - "So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:6-7 - "But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, 'It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.' And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in"

Prophecies of His Death

27. Forsaken by His Disciples

Old Testament Prophecy:

Zechariah 13:7 - "'Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, against the Man who is My Companion,' says the LORD of hosts. 'Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered'"

Matthew 26:31,56 - "Then Jesus said to them, 'All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: "I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered"'... 28. Accused by False Witnesses

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 35:11 - "Fierce witnesses rise up; they ask me things that I do not know." Psalm 27:12 - "Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 26:59-61 - "Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward" Mark 14:57-58 - "Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 'We heard Him say, "I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands"'"

29. Silent Before Accusers

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:7 - "He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:12-14 - "And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said to Him, 'Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?' But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly" Mark 15:3-5 - "And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing. Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, 'Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!' But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled"

30. Wounded and Bruised

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:5 - "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." Zechariah 13:6 - "And one will say to him, 'What are these wounds between your arms?' Then he will answer, 'Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:26 - "Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified" 1 Peter 2:24 - "Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed"

31. Struck and Spit Upon

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 50:6 - "I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting." Micah 5:1 - "They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 26:67 - "Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands" Matthew 27:30 - "Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head" Luke 22:63 - "Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him"

32. Mocked

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 22:7-8 - "All those who see Me ridicule Me; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 'He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!'"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:39-43 - "And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, 'You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.' Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, 'He saved others; Himself He cannot save... He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him'"

33. Fell Under the Cross

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 109:24 - "My knees are weak through fasting, and my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 19:17 - "And He, bearing His cross, went out" Luke 23:26 - "Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus" (Implying Jesus could no longer carry it)

34. Hands and Feet Pierced

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 22:16 - "For dogs have surrounded Me; the congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet" Zechariah 12:10 - "Then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 20:25,27 - "The other disciples therefore said to him, 'We have seen the Lord.' So he said to them, 'Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.'... Then He said to Thomas, 'Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side'" John 19:37 - "And again another Scripture says, 'They shall look on Him whom they pierced'"

35. Crucified with Thieves

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:12 - "And He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:38 - "Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left" Mark 15:27-28 - "With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, 'And He was numbered with the transgressors'"

36. Prayed for His Persecutors

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:12 - "He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Luke 23:34 - "Then Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do'"

37. Rejected by His Own People

Old Testament Prophecy:

Isaiah 53:3 - "He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him." Psalm 69:8 - "I have become a stranger to my brothers, and an alien to my mother's children"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 1:11 - "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him" John 7:5 - "For even His brothers did not believe in Him" John 7:48 - "Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?"

38. Hated Without Cause

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 69:4 - "Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head" Psalm 35:19 - "Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 15:24-25 - "If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause'"

39. Friends Stood Afar Off

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 38:11 - "My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague, and my relatives stand afar off."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Luke 23:49 - "But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things"

40. People Shook Their Heads

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 109:25 - "I also have become a reproach to them; when they look at me, they shake their heads." Psalm 22:7 - "All those who see Me ridicule Me; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head"

Fulfillment in Jesus:

41. People Stared at Him

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 22:17 - "I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me."

42. Garments Divided and Lots Cast

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 22:18 - "They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 19:23-24 - "Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, 'Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,' that the Scripture might be fulfilled"

43. Suffered Thirst

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 69:21 - "They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink." Psalm 22:15 - "My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

John 19:28 - "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, 'I thirst!'" John 19:29 - "Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth"

44. Gall and Vinegar Given to Him

Old Testament Prophecy:

Psalm 69:21 - "They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."

Fulfillment in Jesus:

Matthew 27:34 - "They gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink" John 19:29-30 - "Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!'"

45. His Forsaken Cry

Conclusion
